Getting Your Boiler Ready For Winter

Having access to heated air is essential when it comes to keeping your home's interior at a comfortable temperature. As outside temperatures begin to drop, you may find yourself wanting to turn on your boiler in order to heat your home.

Here are three tips that you can use to ensure your boiler is ready to perform safely and efficiently when heating your home throughout the coming winter months.

1. Take a look at the pilot light.

One of the first things that you should do when preparing to fire your boiler up for the winter is take a close look at the pilot light. The flame produced by your pilot light can be a useful tool when it comes to diagnosing the health of your boiler system.

You want the flame to burn a clean blue. If you see that the flame has a yellow or smoky appearance, this could be a sign that there is a serious problem within your boiler. Contact a repair specialist to diagnose the problem before you fire up your boiler for the winter.

2. Check the area around your boiler.

You should take the time to clear away any stored items that have been placed next to your boiler as you prepare the appliance for winter. Not only will removing these objects help to eliminate potential fire hazards, it will allow you to fully examine the boiler from all angles.

Check for signs of leaks or loose hardware that could affect the efficiency of your boiler over time. Have a technician take a look at your boiler if you spot any leaks to determine where the fluid is coming from and eliminate the leak in order to help you keep your heating costs as low as possible this winter.

3. Check your boiler's pressure.

As your boiler ages, it can begin to lose pressure over time. This loss in pressure can compromise the boiler's ability to effectively supply your home with heated air, so you should take the time to check the pressure level prior to running your boiler through the winter.

Compare the reading on the pressure gauge with the manufacturer's pressure recommendations for your specific make and model. If the pressure gauge's reading is too low or too high, turn off your boiler and have a repair technician come to your home and make repairs before relying on the boiler to heat your home in the future.

Being able to properly prepare your boiler for winter will ensure that the appliance can safely and efficiently heat your home.
